Shumate Auctions has been pointing the way to quality auctions since 1916, it's what we do best!
Shumate Auctions offers responsive and courteous service for all kinds of auctions - estates, consignment, equipment, tools and benefits. We also offer personal property appraisals. I grew up in the auction business. My Grandfather, Latham Shumate, was primary auctioneer in Fauquier County from 1916 to the late 1950's. My father, Wilbur, joined the family business in the late 1930's and continued to provide quality and colorful auctions well into the early 1990's. Printed auction ads show both of them had auctions on the same day in opposite ends of the County,
At five, it all started for me as the ticket runner for my father. Then I moved to the cashier table and shared the clerking job with my brother. As a teenager, I began keeping the records for his business. So, I guess I started in the business around 1958! When I turned 50, I thought "If I am going to become an Auctioneer, I better get started, half my life is over". So I became a graduate of The Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, NC, and completed the Certified Appraiser Guild of America certification program.
We are family oriented and you will see the girls in the kitchen and Clayton hanging around sometimes moving tables. My goal is to continue to provide the same personal attention and fairness to my clients for which the Shumate name is known.
